Thank you for your support of Port Discovery Children’s Museum – and for your belief in our mission to use play, learning and community to be a positive force in the lives of children, families, and the communities we serve.
I’m writing to share with you that I have announced that I will retire from my role as President & CEO of Port Discovery Children’s Museum in the fall of 2021, after 23 years of service at the Museum.
Back when we opened Port Discovery, one of our favorite phrases was “If you can dream it, you can do it.” And for the last 20+ years, I’ve been witness to many dreams being forged – and many dreams coming true. How lucky I have been!
Together with my Port Discovery family, we’ve opened and created one of the top Children’s Museums in the country. We’ve brought millions of children and families to play and learn at Port Discovery, as well as have brought play and learning to hundreds of thousands of children in classrooms and communities all across the State of Maryland.
As a community resource, an educational lab, and an advocate for children and families of all abilities, Port Discovery’s work extends well beyond what happens during a physical visit within our four walls.
We’ve undergone tremendous renovations and transformations, including the creation of our brand new SkyClimber and Port exhibit. We have successfully pivoted our efforts to serve our communities throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
We’ve launched community based programs in unique and important ways, including our Fathers at Play program, our Youth Advisory Committee, Salute The Troops, and our newly launched PlayMakers access program. While many of these efforts were once dreams, they are now reality – and critical ingredients in making Port Discovery such an integral part of our community. The key to this all along the way has been our partner organizations, far and wide – helping us make it happen.
Today, Port Discovery is strong, with a solid foundation for bringing unique and powerful play and learning to children and families. Our team has come together in extraordinary ways over the last several years – and they are poised to move the Museum forward in ways that will continue the Museum’s tradition as leader – and in making positive change in our world.
A Transition Committee led by Port Discovery’s Board of Directors has begun the process of searching for a new CEO. The committee will be co- chaired by Dennis Rasmussen, our Board Chair and Gordon Stetz, Treasurer and member of the Executive Committee.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to have been part of the journey of Port Discovery – from opening the doors to where we are today. Surrounded by an amazing team of co-workers, board and other volunteers, it’s been simply, an honor. The Museum is well-positioned for its next chapter and I can’t wait to see what’s next.
President & CEO, Port Discovery Children’s Museum
