Thanks to the support of donors, funders and visitors, Port Discovery is able to make play accessible for more children and families every year!
Every Child Should Have Opportunities to Play!
We believe every child is important, unique, equal, deserving, special, and absolutely critical to our future. We also believe that every child should have access to purposeful play.
Thanks to our donors and other funders, we are able to provide free and reduced admission to more than one-third of our visitors annually. Each school group that visits Port Discovery receives reduced or free access to the museum. Military families also receive reduced or free admission to the Museum. And, families facing financial, health, and other hardships receive reduced or free admission and memberships. In addition, we offer a number of community initiatives including outreach into classrooms and communities, sensory-friendly times, a Fathers at Play Program, and more.
Port Discovery's Access Programs Include
Port Discovery Children’s Museum is committed to ensuring every child has access to powerful, purposeful play – and as part of that commitment, we’re proud to launch our new PlayMakers program aimed at encouraging people of all backgrounds and circumstances to visit and benefit from Port Discovery Children’s Museum by eliminating cost as a barrier to visiting. Through Port Discovery’s PlayMakers program, any Maryland family that qualifies for nutritional assistance and is in possession of a valid EBT/Independence Card or WIC ID can visit Port Discovery for $3 per person (valid for up to 5 tickets per EBT/Independence Card or WIC ID) on any day the Museum is open to the general public. Children under the age of one enter for free, but you still MUST reserve a ticket for each child visiting. Additional guests age one or older are welcome but must pay the full $19.95 per person admission rate.
$2 Community Day
On $2 Community Day, Port Discovery admission is just $2 per person, allowing everyone to experience the Museum's exhibits and experiences at a deeply-discounted rate! Check our Hours, Admission & Discounts page for upcoming dates and information for $2 Community Days.
Fathers at Play
Developed by Port Discovery Children’s Museum, Fathers at Play engages Baltimore’s vulnerable low-income fathers in unique monthly father-child events. Through a partnership with the Center for Urban Families (CFUF), cohorts of fathers from CFUF’s Baltimore Responsible Fatherhood Project will engage in ongoing playful learning experiences at Port Discovery with their children and learn how to extend the play into their homes and lives. In addition, participants will receive memberships to Port Discovery Children’s Museum so they can continue to visit the Museum with their children and engage in playful learning together. In the initial Fathers at Play program lauching in January 2020, participants will take part in father-child play-based sessions and events, which will include guided and free play activities at the Museum, facilitated lunch conversations, and take-home play kits that mirror and extend the type of play that occurred at the museum into the homes of these families. Transportation and lunch will be provided for participants.
Schools and Groups
Thousands of children visit Port Discovery Children's Museum each year at little or no cost thanks to funding from the Maryland State Department of Education. Visit our Groups and Field Trips page for more information.
