Things to Know:
  • Although Port Discovery remains open, visitors cannot access the main Museum while construction is underway. Instead, join us to enjoy the hands-on and interactive Construction Zone in the Atrium at Port Discovery sponsored by M&T Bank. Visitor capacity is limited. Check Port Discovery's website and social media before your visit.
  • Activities are taking place Saturday, January 19th from 10 AM-5 PM, Sunday, January 20th from Noon-5 PM, and Monday, January 21st from 10 AM-5 PM.
  • Admission will be $5 per person for general admission visitors. Members and children under two will enter for free. Tickets for The Construction Zone must be purchased in person.

Celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and legacy through hands-on educational activities exploring African-American history and heritage during Port Discovery’s “I Have a Dream Weekend.” Join in a variety of interactive programs designed to educate, inspire and help children of all ages to understand the impact Martin Luther King, Jr. made on America and the world throughout the weekend, with activities taking place Saturday, January 19th from 10 AM-5 PM, Sunday, January 20th from Noon-5 PM, and Monday, January 21st from 10 AM-5 PM. 

Learn about the important history of African Americans in baseball with the Negro Baseball League. Design and make a quilt square with the Baltimore African American Quilters. Make a birthday card for Martin Luther King, Jr., join in interactive story times featuring short stories about King, and learn about African American Inventors with quick but fun tabletop activities. Wrap up the long weekend on Monday, with a special Living Museum performance by the children from Baltimore’s Northwood Elementary School. These students will be dressed as several important African American individuals throughout history frozen in time, waiting to be brought to life to give you their life story!

Activities Include:

  • Saturday, January 19 | 10 AM – 5 PM: Join in as The Kindersinger sings Happy Birthday to Martin Luther King, Jr., learn about the important history of African Americans in baseball with Negro League Baseball and Mr. Ray Banks, and create Doves of Peace in our StudioWorkshop. Don't forget to create a quilt square with the Baltimore African American Quilters, and meet and learn about animals with Wildlife Adventures!
     
  • Sunday, January 20 | Noon– 5 PM: Learn about the important history of African Americans in baseball with Negro League Baseball, enjoy face-painting (who doesn't love face painting?!) Join in interactive story times that teach children short lessons about Martin Luther King, Jr. and create a quilt square with the Baltimore African American Quilters! Plus, enjoy our early literacy program Mother Goose on the Loose®, explore music and movement through Tiny Tots Music Time, and meet and learn about animals with Wildlife Adventures.
     
  • Monday, January 21 | 10 AM – 5 PM: Don’t miss a special Living Museum where children from Baltimore’s Northwood Elementary School portray several important African American individuals throughout history like Diana Ross and the Obamas! Learn about the important history of African Americans in baseball with Negro League Baseball, and create Doves of Peace in our StudioWorkshop. Don't forget to create a festive quilt square with the Baltimore African American Quilters, and meet and learn about animals with Wildlife Adventures!

Port Discovery’s “I Have a Dream Weekend” will be located inside The Construction Zone in The Atrium at Port DiscoveryThe Construction Zone will be open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission will be $5 per person for general admission visitors. Members and children under two will enter for free. Tickets for The Construction Zone must be purchased in person. Hours for the month of January are: Fridays – 10 AM – 4 PM, Saturdays – 10 AM – 5 PM, Sundays – Noon – 5 PM. The Construction Zone will also be open on Monday, January 21 from 10 AM – 5 PM for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. The Construction Zone is located in the Atrium at Port Discovery Children’s Museum (directly next door to the main Museum).
