4 Tips to Help Parents Survive Virtual Learning

Parenting is hard work – even when a pandemic isn’t taking place. Then add in working and online schooling for your little ones…it can all seem a little…impossible.

Schools and teachers are all doing the very best they can manage virtual learning – but there’s no getting around that moms, dads and caregivers have their hands full trying to make online learning happen – and work.

We’re here to help – and together with our partners at Pearson Online Academy, we’ve put together some tips to help you prepare, manage, and survive virtual learning this school year.

Virtual Learning Tips from Port Discovery & Pearson Online Academy: 4 Tips to Help Parents Survive Virtual Learning

  1. Establish a routine for school days. Many schools are creating schedules to help parents and children know what will be happening and when, but managing that schedule can be a challenge when you have many other things going on – and kids who sometimes struggle with staying focused. Establishing a routine and pre-set “school stations” can help kids – and you – get through the day more successfully. Try things like setting up school stations with supplies, digital devices, and small snacks so kids have most of what they need readily available. Try going over the school day schedule at breakfast each morning, setting alarms for regular check-ins throughout the day, and peppering in routine breaks for the bathroom, snacks, and getting the wiggles out.  Looking for more tips? Check out these ideas from our friends at Connections Academy.
  1. Add extracurricular – and fun! - classes in to your schedule. To keep your child engaged and enjoying learning, add in classes that spark their imaginations and curiosity – and that they think are fun. Consider online courses that explore things like art, music, language, and more. These types of opportunities are great for supplementing your child’s existing curriculum while also encouraging them to explore new interests. Explore online courses from our learning partner, Pearson Online Academy, hand-picked to provide the exciting and interactive art, music, science, and social experiences you enjoy at Port Discovery Children’s Museum in an online format.

  2. Connect with your student’s teachers – and with your support system. As is the case throughout any school year, your student’s teachers and fellow parents can be great resources for helping you navigate your child’s learning needs. Teachers and parents alike will be learning and adjusting throughout the school year – and can help you come up with strategies and solutions that can help you and your little learner. Swap tips on what’s working (and stories of what’s not!), have a good old-fashioned vent session and try to get through this together. This school year may not be an easy one – but with a support system to connect with, you won’t be in it all alone.

  3. Play Every Day!  Play is the very best way that children learn. The good news – play can be easy, fun – and a great activity for children to do independently. It can also be a great break for moms, dads, and adults of all kinds! Don’t forget to also explore our existing library of At-Home Play activities, featuring short videos, downloadable worksheets, and activity ideas. We also offer Virtual Learning for Schools, featuring live and pre-recorded programs that teachers and schools can use.

This school year comes with even more challenges than usual. We promise to be here for you with helpful articles, Play at Home activities, and Virtual Learning options for Families & Schools - all designed to provide some much-needed support, play, and learning as you navigate this new world.

Port Discovery Children’s Museum will receive a donation for each course purchased via the Museum. As a non-profit, each donation helps support Port Discovery’s mission to educate children and inspire life-long curiosity through innovative play-to-learn activities.
