Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. played an integral part in the United States Civil Rights movement - and it is vital to continue to educate younger generations about the perseverance he showed in fighting racial discrimination.

Be the Light - MLK Celebrations

Not sure about how you can educate your little learner about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? Check out the easy and fun activities below that will help your kiddo understand the importance of paying tribute to Dr. King each January -

  1. Read About Dr. King’s Life & Accomplishments via National Geographic Kids

National Geographic Kids has got you covered, parents! This helpful webpage will allow you and your kiddo to read about Dr. King together, look at photographs and videos throughout Dr. King’s life and more.

  1. DIY “I Have A Dream” Mobile from Scholastic

Take advantage of this free and fun Mobile template from Scholastic, giving your little learner space to write their own dreams and watch them soar (literally)!

The Mobile is shaped like a cloud, encouraging children to think about the dreams they have for themselves, their family and their community - and creates a pretty space for your little one’s dreams to be displayed!

  1. Visit Port Discovery during Be the Light Weekend!

Each year, Port Discovery Children’s Museum celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with interactive activities designed just for kiddos!

While this year may feature face coverings and limited Museum capacity, we’re thrilled to honor Dr. King with an interactive art mural and festive theater performance!

Children and families are invited to engage in some fun, slightly messy, artistic play with the Keep Playing Baltimore! Mural. Designed by Port Discovery's Artist in Residence, Gen Fraser, this larger-than-life piece will feature iconic symbols and landmarks of Baltimore, celebrating our city and community. Buy tickets now!

Plus, Join us for an exclusive and virtual performance featuring Diane Macklin: Storyteller on Sunday, January 17 at 11AM! Diane specializes in audience participating, character education and developmentally appropriate programming – making this Storyteller performance perfect for little learners! Pre-registration is required - sign up now for this FREE virtual performance!

However you choose to remember and honor Dr. King this year, we hope you and your little learner enjoy the time spent learning about this important Civil Rights figure together!
