Explore educational books together that celebrate everyone's unique differences!
Here at Port Discovery, we love to read and learn! Reading stories together is a wonderful way to enrich your child’s vocabulary, develop their imagination, and enhances their social-emotional development. Having books available to them that depict a variety of individuals and communities not only expands the world they’re exposed to beyond their physical surroundings, but helps them embrace the things that make them unique and encourages them to love themselves.
Here are a few books to read this week that you can read together and focus on celebrating what makes us special:
-
I Like Myself! by Karen Beaumont
-
Firenze's Light: A Children's Book about Gratitude, Compassion and Self-Appreciation by Jessica Collaço
-
Who's in My Family? by Robie H. Harris.
-
A Family is a Family is a Family by Sara O'Leary
In this book, a group of children each share what makes their family special, and while some of them feel like their family is too different, listening to their friends makes them more comfortable as they realize all families are special.
-
The Family Book by Todd Parr
-
The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson
As you read these with your child, we encourage you to use the books as a prompt to talk with your child about what they feel makes them, their family, or their community unique. What are some ways they can share their unique gifts with other children? Can they draw a picture of their family and include some of the things that make it special?
