Each year at our Play It Forward event, the “Great Friend to Kids” award is given to honor an individual or organization that has made a significant and outstanding contribution to strenthening and advancing the interests of children.
At Port Disovery’s virtual Play it Forward event on May 12th, it was our great pleasure to award 2020’s Great Friend to Kids Award to Bruce L. Cleland, former President and CEO of Campbell and Company.
Bruce has touched the lives of thousands of children – not only here in Maryland but across the country and even internationally by founding Team in Training for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. In the past 30 years, Team in Training has impacted countless lives through supporting research and breakthroughs for the treatment of cancer.
This amazing work began to impact one very special life, that of his daughter Georgia—who was diagnosed at the age of two with leukemia. To raise funds to show his gratitude, Bruce was inspired to run the New York City marathon for the cause-- and he didn’t want to train for the grueling race on his own. Bruce knew that with the support and push from a whole team of trainers behind him – as a runner he could go farther and do better than he could alone. That was the birth of Team in Training. Today, Georgia is a thriving young woman – and Team in Training is the largest charity athletic training program in the world—and has raised $1.5 billion to date for Leukemia and Lymphoma research and treatment.
Locally, Bruce and his wife Izzy were instrumental in starting The Odyssey School, supporting the Orokawa YMCA in Towson, and so many worthy organizations – including Port Discovery – they have transformed the lives of countless children and families.
There are no adequate words to express the gratitude we feel for Bruce and the impact he has had on children and families of Baltimore, Maryland, and far beyond. Congratulations, Bruce, and thank you for all that you have done to improve so many lives.
