Celebrate American Indian Heritage Weekend at Port Discovery!

Join us for fun and unique opportunities to celebrate and learn about Native American Heritage 

Friday, November 29 - Sunday, December 1

Learn about the traditions and heritage of local American Indian tribes throughout American Indian Heritage Weekend! Meet and talk to representatives from the Conoy and Piscataway tribes, the Baltimore American Indian Center, and more. Enjoy cultural celebrations, traditional dancing demonstrations, displays of regalia, interactive art projects and more.

Friday, November 29, 2019:

  • 11:00 AM - Call for Procession:  Observe a traditional call for procession featuring song and dance from members of local American Indian tribes.
  • 11:30 AM:   Opening Ceremony & Honor Song: Join us as Keith Colston - Director of Ethnic Commissions at Maryland Governor's Office of Community Initiatives - hosts a traditional call for procession, opening ceremony and honor song honoring American Indian Heritage Day.
  • 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM: Explore American Indian Culture & Traditions: Learn more about American Indian culture and traditions at Culture Corner with the Baltimore American Indian Center.
  • 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM: Accohannock Indian Tribe Display: Joining us from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Accohannock Tribal Chairman Michael "Fierce Arrow" Hinman will share oral tradition, regalia, and cultural artifacts.  Working in the medium of wood burning, embroidery, and photography, the portraits and regalia of the tribe members span several generations.
  • All Day: Try your own hand at creating your own form of Corn Husk Dolls, a traditional American Indian art form.

Saturday, November 30, 2019:

  • 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM: Explore American Indian Culture & Traditions:  Learn more about American Indian culture and traditions at Culture Corner with the Baltimore American Indian Center.
  • 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM: Piscataway Conoy Tribe Display: Join us as we welcome members of the Piscataway Conoy Tribe to the Port Discovery Children’s Museum.  Talk and learn from one of the three officially recognized tribes of Maryland, as they relay their history via oral tradition.  Their impressive display will include indigenous housing, relics, and regalia.
  • 2:00 PM: Kentkatam: Let's Dance (presented by Conoy Creations):  You become the star of the show as we learn Piscataway history and culture through social dances that have been passed down for generations
  • All Day: Try your own hand at creating your own form of Corn Husk Dolls, a traditional American Indian art form.

Sunday, December 1, 2019:

  • Noon – 4:00 PM: Explore American Indian Culture & Traditions:  Learn more about American Indian culture and traditions at Culture Corner with the Baltimore American Indian Center.
  • 2:00 PM: Kentkatam: Let's Dance (presented by Conoy Creations):  You become the star of the show as we learn Piscataway history and culture through social dances that have been passed down for generations
