June Events and Programs at Port Discovery

Join Port Discovery in June for “Celebrate Our Stories” month! Activities and programs will center learning about and celebrating the unique contributions of other people and of ourselves. Design your own family coat of arms. Learn how African drumming has been used for communication. Watch a selection of Kamishibai stories. Celebrate how African American music has impacted American music and culture. Help bring stories to life with guest artist Kelsey Joyce. And more!

June hours: Port Discovery is open from June 1st-June 19th Wednesday-Sunday with Play Session from 10 AM – 1 PM and 2 PM – 5 PM. Port Discovery is open June 20th- September 5th seven days a week. Beginning June 20th, Tuesday and Thursday morning sessions (10 am-1 pm) are reserved for groups only and are not open to the general public.

Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit

Step into the pages of author Eric Carle's books with Port Discovery Children’s Museum’s limited time exhibit – Very Eric Carle. Explore themes such as hope, hard work, persistence, and friendship as you venture through classic works including The Very Hungry CaterpillarThe Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Lonely Firefly, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle and The Very Busy Spider from beloved author/illustrator Eric Carle. Story Time with Jane Dorfman

Listen and join in! Jane Dorfman tells lively folk and fairy tales for the whole family. Stories of faithful sons and strong-minded daughters. Sunday, June 12 | 11:30 a.m.

Story Time with Ada Ari

Enjoy a fun session of culture and learning. Join Ada Ari as she introduces your little ones to a new language. In this session, children will learn a traditional igbo dance, interact with fun items that are native to the Igbo culture, hear a traditional Igbo folktale story (read in English), and enjoy some coloring activities. A fun and interactive way to expose your young ones to new cultures. Sunday, June 19 | 11:00 a.m.

Story Time and Meet and Greet with Former Mrs. Maryland- Julia Chang

Former Mrs. Maryland America, Julia Chang, will make an appearance at Port Discovery! This will be a meet-and-greet opportunity to take photos and get an autograph. Julia will do a book reading and offer a coloring activity for kids, so they go home as princes and princesses! Saturday, June 25th | 10:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m.

Drumming Them Drums

Join Port Discovery’s own resident musician, Mr. Seth, in a drum circle experience! Use one of our loaner drums and learn how African drumming has been used for communication.  Tuesdays and Fridays | 2 p.m.

Sing-A-Long with Mr. Seth

Join Port Discovery’s own resident musician, Mr. Seth, in an authentic campfire sing-a-long with live, acoustic guitar accompaniment. Listen and sing both old favorites, tunes inspired by children’s books, and original songs. Wednesdays and Saturdays | 3:30 p.m.

Kamishibai Storytelling

Kamishibai or “paper drama” is a form of Japanese storytelling using illustrated cards. Watch a selection of stories while learning about the cultural history and evolution of this beautiful style of performance. Wednesdays and Thursdays | 12 p.m. & 2:30 p.m.

Tribute Act: A Musical Celebration Puppet Show

An interactive performance featuring puppets, pre-recorded audio, and prop musical instruments. Join your hosts Rhythm and Blues as they celebrate how African American music has impacted American music and culture. Selected volunteers will assist in creating a lip-sync’d tribute to different, legendary Black performers throughout the month. Tuesdays | 11:30 a.m. (groups only)

Tribute Act: A Musical Celebration Puppet Show- The Songs of Freedom

An interactive performance featuring puppets, pre-recorded audio, and prop musical instruments. This special version will celebrate the history and evolution of musical anthems that celebrate Black pride and progress.  Saturday, June 18 | 12 p.m.

Discovery Cart: The Rainbow Experience

Stop by the Discovery Cart for a selection of science projects or sensory play. This month will feature a selection of experiments and sensory exploration about rainbows and their colors.  Saturdays and Sundays | 2:30 p.m.

Tots on Board: Early Childhood Programs for Infants & Toddlers

Get on board for a singing, swinging story time for toddlers! Listen to a story, songs, and poems along with movement and musical instruments. This month will feature stories and songs about self-expression. Fridays will be themed with books and music written by Eric Carle and his collaborators. Sundays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and Mondays starting 6/21 | 11 a.m.

Studio Workshop Projects: Art Projects for Families

Story Boards:

Take inspiration from Eric Carle’s illustration technique, tell tales, and design characters using tissue paper collages.  

Your Personal Flag: 

Show off a symbolic representation of yourself by designing a unique take-home flag!  On select weekends, learn about artist-activist Gilbert Baker and color symbolism while designing your flag entirely with stripes.  On June 18th and 19th, take inspiration from the official Juneteenth flag and design your own cultural flag with a selection of different colors, shapes, and symbols.  

Family Coat of Arms: 

A coat of arms was used during the Middle Ages by royalty and knights! Create a modern one using a variety of materials.
