Yippie! Summer is offically here which means all day play! Here are a few helpful tips and tricks as you plan your next adventure at Port Discovery Children’s Museum!
One of the first things you’ll notice when you visit: the center of the Museum has been totally transformed with brand new exhibits. Soar to new heights on the four-story SkyClimber. Sail towards new adventures on The Port. Enjoy new activities including a Tangram Wall, Art Showcase, Sensory Wall and more. There’s LOTS of new adventures to be had on these massive new exhibits – and in our many other favorites! It will be tough to explore it all in just one visit – but that’s okay – part of the fun of Port Discovery is coming back again and again to see how your little one changes, develops and builds confidence over time.
Encourage your children to build confidence, learn problem solving skills, build motor skills, and have fun as they try their hand at climbing the SkyClimber! (And get in on the fun as you climb along with them!)
Encourage your children to dream – and test their courage – as they climb their way up and around the four-story SkyClimber that takes them up into the clouds. They’ll then have the option to slide down an ultra-fun (and ultra-swirly!) four-story slide, or to climb down towards the ground.
This new, impressive climber is designed to build confidence – and while we anticipate lots of visitors will make it to the tippy-top, it’s perfectly okay if they make it part of the way up! We encourage adults to climb along with their children – and to encourage them to go up – or down. If needed, Port Discovery staff will assist climbers via staff-only entrance points. We recommend the exhibit for ages 5+, but you are the best judge of your children’s interest and ability. Socks (but not shoes!) are required to climb. We'll provide them to borrow or to buy, and you're more than welcome to use your own!
BONUS: Toddlers can get in on the action, too, with a soft play area on the ground level featuring Port Discovery's newest sea-friend, Chessie, the Chesapeake Bay Sea Monster!
Here’s something you can’t miss: A GIANT ship in the Museum! Whoa! This life-sized cargo ship is just part of the fun, though. The Port is a hands-on, massive new exhibit where little learners and their families can learn more about the Port of Baltimore – and the many jobs and products that make up one of the world’s most active ports! Role play as the ship’s captain, sailors, navigators and engineers as you explore the seas, discover how products make their way around the world, and work together to move, stack and explore what’s inside shipping containers. Operate a gantry crane, learn how to navigate and speed up or slow down the S.S. Friend Ship, and learn history about the Port of Baltimore throughout the exhibit!
Our promise to you is that any day at Port Discovery will be a day well spent…so it’s important that you have access to amenities that will make your visit a great one. In addition to new exhibits, several guest amenities have also been improved. We’ve transformed the lobby to make your entrance to Port Discovery easier (and more fun!). We’ve updated our restrooms, lunchroom, and locker spaces. We’ve added family seating areas so that you have comfortable places to take a quick break. And, we’ve added a new private Nursing Station (located in Tot Trails on the second floor).
Milk a cow, diagnose a horse with x-rays, play a Chesapeake Bay pinball machine and meet some local farmers via video in the Here We Grow! exhibit, an interactive Maryland-themed exhibit from Port Discovery Children’s Museum. You’ll find Here We Grow! on the third floor of the Museum, and as you explore, you’ll learn about the processes, products, and people who work on farms. Hands-on activities help children learn about the importance of agriculture in their everyday lives.
Like our little learners who visit us every day, we like to test and preview things and see how they work! Join us in our Previews, Pop-Ups & Prototypes space to see what we’ve cooked up – you never know what fun program or exhibit preview you might find!
Other things to remember:
- All exhibits are now open! Yippie! We’re so excited to welcome everyone back to some of their long-time favorite exhibits like Wonders of Water!, Tiny’s Diner, BGE Studio Workshop and more!
- We’re sorry, but food and drinks are not permitted inside Museum exhibits. Good news alert: Museum guests can continue to bring in bagged lunches, snacks and outside food to enjoy in designated eating areas.
