Community organizations team up to encourage reading, play and discovery during the summer months.
Modeled after the popular and award-winning Read to Reef program, Ticket to Discovery encourages Baltimore-area children to fuel their love of reading, learning, discovery, and play by reading or listening to books this summer – and then enjoying a day full of play at Port Discovery Children’s Museum!
This May, Baltimore-area children in fifth grade or younger with a Pratt Library card can receive a special Ticket to Discovery bookmark from their local Pratt Library, while supplies last. After reading or listening to any five books that spark their curiosity and creativity, participants can use the unique code on the bookmark to reserve up to two free admission tickets to Port Discovery Children’s Museum via the Museum’s online ticketing system. Participants have through August 31, 2022 to complete the program and visit Port Discovery.
Enoch Pratt Free Library and Port Discovery have created a suggested book list with titles suitable for children of all reading levels, including children who have not yet learned to read, all designed to help children discover new ideas, topics, and passions through reading. The book list and program details are available at www.PortDiscovery.org/Read.
“When children read books—together with a parent or caregiver, or on their own as they grow older—they are creating an essential foundation for lifelong learning, are exploring new topics, ideas and feelings, and are nurturing their curiosity, imaginations and dreams ,” said Rachel Demma, Vice President of Education & Innovation at Port Discovery Children’s Museum. “We are thrilled to partner with Enoch Pratt Free Library on this important initiative, designed to inspire and incentivize children to read, discover and play throughout the summer months.”
“At the Pratt Library, our mission is to provide access. We are thrilled that this partnership with Port Discovery Children’s Museum will give local children and families access to one of the top five children’s museums in the United States that they may not otherwise have been able to afford,” says Pratt Library President & CEO Heid Daniel. “I hope this helps reinforce a lifelong love of learning in our youngest library customers.”
The Ticket to Discovery Book Club program will launch just before Port Discovery Children’s Museum welcomes the special, limited-time Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit to the Museum. Set to open on May 21, 2022, Very Eric Carle features experiences and activities inspired by five of Eric Carle’s classic books: The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Lonely Firefly, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle and The Very Busy Spider. The exhibit will be open at Port Discovery through September 5, 2022.

About Enoch Pratt Free Library
The Enoch Pratt Free Library, the nation’s first free library system, opened its doors in 1886, the result of the generosity and imagination of businessman and philanthropist Enoch Pratt. Mr. Pratt envisioned a public library where “races, ages, and socio-economic classes mingled and people could educate themselves – without cost,” and his passionate belief continues to guide the organization. Today’s Pratt Library – Baltimore’s public library and the Maryland State Library Resource Center – consists of the Central Library, 21 branches, two bookmobiles, the Mobile Job Center, and the Pratt Centers for Technology Training. The Library’s mission is to empower, enrich, and enhance the quality of life for all through equitable access to information, services, and opportunity.
