Breaking Financial Barriers Through Numerous Community Access Programs
Port Discovery Children’s Museum understands and celebrates the community diversity within Baltimore City and the surrounding communities. After just celebrating our 20th Birthday here in the historic Fish Market Building, what can we say - we love Baltimore!
Part of Port Discovery’s mission as a non-profit organization is to provide children a safe, smart place to engage in child-driven playful learning - inside and outside the Museum walls. Port Discovery loves having the opportunity to join in on community events and educational outreach opportunities to bring our hands-on fun directly to the kids!
Play Isn’t Always Accessible
Port Discovery also understands how difficult having the opportunity for play can be for some families. Whether it is the demands of a busy lifestyle, neighborhood violence or financial reasons - there are children who may not have the access to a safe, smart place to learn - like Port Discovery.
With the assistance of generous donations, Port Discovery is able to eliminate financial barriers to families and children by providing free and reduced admission and memberships to Maryland school students, low-income families, and military families.
Breaking Barriers & Providing Access
Port Discovery is proud to offer interactive and educational exhibits and drop-in programs that allow children to dream, take risks, be curious and most importantly...play! Because of this, and Port Discovery’s belief that every child should have access to a safe, smart place to play, Port Discovery created Access Programs:
- School Access: offers free admission to Head Start classes and Title I schools, helps ready rising kindergarteners for school, and engages at-risk students in outreach programs.
- Family Access: provides free memberships and admission to low-income families.
- Military Access: supports families of active duty military personnel and veterans by offering free admission and discounts.
- Access & Accessibility: serves the special needs community by subsidizing visitation during the Museum’s events tailored to children with disabilities.
Through these several Access Programs funded by generous and kind donors, Port Discovery is thrilled to offer admission into the Museum for those may not have had access otherwise.
Port Discovery envisions a future where learning through play is recognized and respected - and believes the power of play can transform the lives of children.
Thank you to donors who have helped us support these Access Programs over the years. Just in fiscal year 2017, 33% of Port Discovery’s non-member guests received free or significantly reduced admission through the Museum’s combined access initiatives.
