Grant will support Port Discovery’s Efforts to Serve Children, Families and Schools and Address Impacts of COVID-19
Port Discovery Children’s Museum was recently awarded with a $193,426 IMLS CARES Act Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support Port Discovery’s efforts in responding to the coronavirus pandemic.
In response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on at-risk youth and the community, this funding will help support Port Discovery’s efforts to create and deliver virtual educational enrichment for students in under-resourced schools and neighborhoods, launch new programming that helps bridge the digital divide among early learners, and provide professional development aimed at helping Port Discovery increase their capacity to support children dealing with trauma. The funding will also support Port Discovery’s continued efforts to provide safe, engaging and accessible opportunities for children and families to visit the Museum and learn through play.
“As pillars of our communities, libraries and museums bring people together by providing important programs, services, and collections. These institutions are trusted spaces where people can learn, explore and grow,” said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. “IMLS is proud to support their initiatives through our grants as they educate and enhance their communities."
“Play is essential for children - it’s how they learn about themselves, connect with others, and learn about the world around them,” said Bryn Parchman, President & CEO of Port Discovery Children’s Museum. “This funding helps Port Discovery continue offering playful learning and important opportunities to build the soft skills that will help them be successful in life through innovative programming and playful experiences that will help children and families as they recover from the impacts of COVID-19. We are thankful to IMLS for their support at this pivotal time.”
In total, IMLS awarded an additional $2.9 Million in IMLS CARES Act Grant Awards to Museums and Libraries as part of this initiative. A full list of grant recipients is available at https://www.imls.gov/news/additional-29-million-imls-cares-act-grants-awarded-museums-and-libraries.
