Port Discovery’s Pop-Up Play Space is one of the interactive, educational activities children and families can enjoy while Port Discovery constructs two new immersive exhibits, the Port Exhibit and the SkyClimber, and works on Museum improvements including an efficient new lobby, new nursing area, more family seating areas, a renovated lunchroom and updated restrooms. The new exhibits and improvements are designed to improve the visitor experience and fuel play and learning for future generations of children.
In addition to enjoying the Pop-Up Play Space, children and families are invited to visit The Construction Zone in the Atrium at Port Discovery, featuring areas where children can make mini-robots, build with giant life-sized building blocks, launch rockets towards the moon, and create theatrical plays. The Construction Zone is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and is located in the Atrium at Port Discovery Children’s Museum (directly next door to the main Museum). Admission is $5 per person (members and children under two enter for free). The presenting sponsor for The Construction Zone is M&T Bank. The exhibit is supported in part by W.R. Grace.
When Port Discovery celebrates the grand opening of new exhibits and improved amenities in late spring 2019, visitors will soar to new heights on the SkyClimberand sail towards new adventures on a massive ship that’s part of an immersive Port Exhibit celebrating the Port of Baltimore. Grand-opening dates and opportunities to explore the transformed Museum will be announced as the Museum is further along in the construction project. The new exhibits and improvements mark the Museum’s most ambitious renovation since opening in December 1998, and come after serving more than five million children and families through powerful, purposeful play.
The construction of new exhibits and improved Museum amenities are being funded via Port Discovery’s Playing Today, Leading Tomorrow Capital Campaign. Of the $10.5 million campaign funds needed to complete the planned construction, $9.7 Million has been raised to date thanks to support from a broad-base of contributors including the State of Maryland, the City of Baltimore, corporations and professional firms, charitable foundations and generous individual donors.
