Port Discovery Sparks STEM Learning for Baltimore City Students with Thanks to The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation

It’s electric!

Nope, we’re not talking about the song…we’re talking about the spark happening among third, fourth and fifth grade students around Baltimore City as they learn about electricity, chemistry, the importance of careful observation– as well as many other STEM topics!

Thanks to a partnership between Port Discovery Children’s Museum and The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, children at Arlington Elementary/Middle School, George Washington Elementary School, and Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle Schools are participating in 13-weeks of multiple series programming that explores the fields of civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical, and aerospace engineering; that introduce children to animal classifications, the behaviors of primates, and scientific observation; and that explores the states of matter, chemical reactions and the world of chemistry.

The programs are designed to spark children’s curiosity and confidence about science, technology, engineering, math, and more – and they’re doing just that.

As children create electrical circuits that play music, turn on light bulbs, and fan motors, they’re learning about the power of electricity – and the power of their own abilities. As they experiment with different chemical reactions to create slime – and to figure out how ingredients interact – they’re learning problem-solving skills – and the importance of asking questions and experimenting. And, they’re learning that science is not only important, but also fun – and something to be excited about.

As part of the Baltimore Elementary and Middle School Library Project, the Weinberg Foundation and its partners bring enrichment programming from a variety of educational providers into under-resourced schools and communities.

Each year, Port Discovery provides a variety of hands-on, in-classroom programs throughout Baltimore City and its surrounding counties that encourage STEM learning, introduce children to visual arts, develop social and emotional skills, and more. This program, however, marks the one of longest consecutive sessions delivered by Port Discovery to any one group.
