Stretchy Universe Slime

Love playing with slime? Learn about the universe through a cool science experiment. This activity instructs families on how to make galaxy slime and teaches children about the big bang! Click here for the full material list and activity directions courtesy of NASA.

Play Tip #1 - Blow Bubbles with Slime

  • Make a ball with your slime
  • Use a straw and insert it into the slime and then blow on the straw

Play Tip #2 - Mold your Slime

  • Take molds for ice, cupcake liners, strainers, and cups
  • Use you slime to fill the form and then turn the mold upside down
  • Observe the forms your slime take and see if it keeps the form or change

Play Tip - #3

  • Fold down a balloon to widen the opening (blow up the balloon a few times to stretch it out)
  • Place the slime inside the balloon and tie it back up
  • Try it out as a stress ball or try bouncing it

Play Tip - #1 Put On a Play

  • Use your new habitat as a prop in a cool play
  • Ask the actors questions such as Who are you? What is your mission? Do you succeed?

Tip #2 - Complete a Mission

  • Use the habitat as the base of operations
  • Determine what your mission is: are you here to explore the area, or conduct experiments?
  • Encourage children to collect samples by hiding paper or other designated objects around the house or yard

Play Tip #1 - Facilitate Play

  • When NASA sends satellites or rockets to space, they have a mission or goal for that spacecraft. With your new space craft create your own mission by asking these questions:
  • What did add to your spacecraft?
  • Where are you going?
  • What are you looking for?
  • What did you find?

Try other fun mission by using the space place center and learning about the solar systems and other galaxies.

Once you finish building and testing your rocket try out these activities

Play Tip #1 

  • Gather round household objects for you to use such as hula-hoops, baskets, or use string to make a circle.
  • Label the objects after the planet of the solar system Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
  •  Challenge yourself to land on the different planets of the solar system using what you have learned.

Play Tip #2

  • Gather empty cans or cups
  • Stack them on one other, spread them out, or build a landing pad
  • Test out accuracy, force, and your ability land
