What's there to see and do?

Explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in fun, playful ways during STEM in Spring at Port Discovery! Enjoy hands-on learning, special performances, and activities from partners including NISE Network (National Informal STEM Education), Eric Energy, Wildlife Adventures, Numbers Alive! and others!

Plus, Explore The Construction Zone and let your little Van Goh shine as you create and make in the Art Studio, build creations straight out your imagination at the Block Dock, explore the Universe and launch rockets towards the moon at the Sun, Earth, Universe exhibit! Plus, take center stage in the Black Box Theater and don't forget to venture upstairs to enjoy The Oasis, Dance Dance Revolution and more!

Friday, April 19 activities:

  • 10:30AM - 1:30PM: Snakes, lizards, turtles...oh my! Learn about the wonderful world of animals in an up-close and hands-on way with Wildlife Adventures!
  • 1:00PM & 2:00PM: Little learners will get up close and personal with all things science during the interactive and hands-on performance from crowd favorite, Eric Energy's Science Spectacular!


Saturday, April 20 activities:

  • All Day: Would you believe us if we said you could fit the entire solar system in your pocket? Stop by the Art Studio to create your very own Pocket Solar System! Learn about the structure of the solar system, colors of planets, and more!
  • 10:00AM - 2:00PM: Ever wanted to ask a real astronaut about what space was like? Enjoy this interactive and educational program from NASA astronaut, Ken Reightley! Listen to Ken tell the audience about his personal experiences exploring space and answer questions straight from the audience. Stick around to make sure you get a signed photo of Ken, too! 
  • 10:00AM - 2:00PM: Enjoy an informational booth from Robinson Nature Center! Stop by and learn about owls and other wild animals local to our area from the Howard County-based Nature Center. 
  • 10:00AM - 2:30PM: What is Neuroscience, you ask? Just a big, fancy word for how your brain works! Learn about how your brain functions while mapping out your own brain with
    NOVA Lab!
  • 10:00AM - 12:00PM: Geared towards littler learners - Hide and Seek Moon allows children to attempt to find hidden animals on the lunar surface of the Moon! Enhance hand-eye coordination and more during this activity.
  • 10:00AM - 12:00PM: Grab a friend and play Space Guess Quest! Amazing pictures of objects in space will lead guest-partners to 20 questions to guess what object is on the other side of the card.  Little learners will learn about planetary and celestial bodies as well as how to group the objects into planets, stars, galaxies, nebulae, and more! 
  • 10:30AM - 1:30PM : Snakes, lizards, turtles...oh my! Learn about the wonderful world of animals in an up-close and hands-on way with Wildlife Adventures!
  • 11:00AM: Enjoy a festive edition of classic drop-in program Circle Time, during Blast Off Circle Time!
  • 1:00PM - 3:00PM: Filtered Light tabletop activity explains that not everything is as it seems, especially when it comes to light.  Little learners will learn a little about the light spectrum, create a little coloring and see what colors will pass through a tinted filter! 
  • 1:30PM & 2:30PM: Sing, dance and make some music of your own during Music with Mister Don!


Sunday, April 21 activities:

  • 1:00PM: Enjoy this fun and magical interactive performance from magician David London! Learn about the wonders of magic during this interactive and jaw-dropping performance, Journey to the ImagiNation!
  • 1:00PM - 3:00PM: Geared towards littler learners - Hide and Seek Moon allows children to attempt to find hidden animals on the lunar surface of the Moon! Enhance hand-eye coordination and more during this activity.
  • 1:00PM - 3:00PM: It's electric! Allow your little learner to experiement with Static Electricity and why it works (think: charged electrons!), what creates static electricity and how to create it at home! 
  • 2:00PM : Join us for an interactive and literacy-skill building storybook reading during Circle Time!
  • 3:00PM - 4:00PM: Astronomy...but make it simple! Expanding Universe takes an exceptionally difficult astronomical study and creates an explanation that is easier for children to follow - that our universe if always expanding and why other galaxies seem to be moving away from us instead of being static. Enjoy learning about the massive size of our universe and space during this interactive tabletop activity.
  • TBD: Numbers are a part of everyday life from math, telling the time on a clock, and more! With Dr. Klemm, numbers are magic and they come to life for you during Numbers Alive!


Monday, April 22 activities:

  • 10:30AM - 1:30PM : Snakes, lizards, turtles...oh my! Learn about the wonderful world of animals in an up-close and hands-on way with Wildlife Adventures!
  • 11:00AM - 3:00PM: Learn hands-on how cells make up literally everything in your life and around you - including you during Journey Inside A Cell!
  • 11:30AM: Bust a move and sing songs in The Oasis alongside The Kindersinger!  
  • 1:00PM & 2:00PM : Little learners will get up close and personal with all things science during the interactive and hands-on performance from crowd favorite, Eric Energy's Science Spectacular!

The Construction Zone is located in the Atrium at Port Discovery Children’s Museum (directly next door to the main Museum). The address is 35 Market Pl., Baltimore MD 21204.

When is it open?

STEM in Spring takes place from Friday, April 19 - Monday, April 22, 2019. Join us

  • Saturday 10AM - 5PM
  • Sunday 12PM - 5PM
  • Monday 10AM - 4PM

 Dates and hours of operation are subject to change. Please check our Tickets & Hours webpage for the most up-to-date information.

Things to Know:

  • Although Port Discovery remains open, visitors cannot access the main Museum while construction is underway. 
  • The Construction Zone is in a space adjacent to the Main Museum. Because space for play and learning is reduced, visitor capacity is limited. We recommend always checking ahead before visiting to ensure The Construction Zone is open. Days and hours of operation are available on our Tickets & Hours webpage. 
  • Admission will be $5 per person for general admission visitors. Members and children under two will enter for free. Tickets for The Construction Zone must be purchased in person.

The Construction Zone is one of the interactive, educational activities children and families can enjoy while Port Discovery constructs two new immersive exhibits, the Port Exhibit and the SkyClimber, and works on Museum improvements including an efficient new lobbynew nursing area, more family seating areas, a renovated lunchroom and updated restrooms. The new exhibits and improvements are designed to improve the visitor experience and fuel play and learning for future generations of children.

The Construction Zone is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $5 per person for general admission visitors. Members and children under two enter for free. Operating hours for the month of April are: Fridays – 1 PM – 4 PM, Saturdays – 10 AM – 5 PM, Sundays – Noon – 5 PM. The Construction Zone is located in the Atrium at Port Discovery Children’s Museum (directly next door to the main Museum). Presenting sponsor: M&T Bank. Supported in part by W.R.
