December is usually a time filled with family, holiday traditions, and fun festivities. But this year, the COVID-19 pandemic is taking its toll on what is otherwise usually a magical time for families.
Holiday parties and festive activities are canceled. Classrooms can only come together virtually. And kids are missing the opportunity to interact with their friends and family beyond the computer screen.
At Port Discovery, we know play can help – which is why we’re proud to continue offering safe, fun, and magical experiences that families can enjoy in-person – including some well-loved holiday traditions like our annual Gingerbrick Decorating event – with some new safety twists!
But we certainly couldn’t do it on our own.
We’ve been fortunate to have the support of donors, funders, friends, and volunteers – like our dedicated longtime friends from PricewaterhouseCoopers. They took on the task of preparing individual packets of supplies for each visitor to make their own cardboard gingerbread house when they visit the museum during Port Discovery's annual Gingerbricks event.
The result: Nearly 200 safely, individually packed bags filled with fun, creative supplies that children and families can use to construct and decorate their very own cardboard Gingerblock….and one massively fun, massively creative life-sized cardboard Gingerbread house that represents a community of children, families and holiday memories that will be cherished – perhaps even more than usual during this difficult time.
On behalf of the many families who joined us to create and decorate Gingerblocks at Port Discovery Children’s Museum – and to enjoy precious time spent together – we send our heartfelt thanks to our friends at PwC for their help in making this event possible.
