Chapter 13 Reading Tips
Dorothy and the Lion receive help to rescue the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow!
Welcome back to Story Time with Port Discovery! We last left Dorothy after she defeated the Wicked Witch of the West, by accident, with water! In this chapter, she and the Lion will figure out how to help the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow!
Tip #1 - for Grown Ups!
Now that the Wicked Witch of the West can no longer harm Dorothy and her friends, she has to rescue her other friends, and both of them need fixing. For this chapter, talk to your kids about people whose job it is to fix things! This is a fun way to explore different jobs people in your community have. Will you choose a mechanic? Maybe an engineer, or a plumber? Talk with your children about the hard work people with these kinds of careers do, and how valuable they are to our community!
Here’s the vocab for the chapter!
A person who builds and fixes things made of tin
An action meaning to fuse together two pieces of metal
To ornament or decorate an object
Tip #2 - for Kids!
Welcome back to our story of Dorothy! In this chapter, the Wicked Witch of the West is gone at last, but the Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow need some fixing up.
For this chapter, your activity challenge is to do some building and fixing!
Step 1: Decide on some building materials! Do you have any blocks at home? If you don’t want to use them, how about some cardboard? Pillows, blankets? Get creative! What do you have lying around that would be fun to build with?
Step 2: Decide what you would like to build! It can be anything!
Step 3: Once you have built your structure, create a “problem” to fix. Maybe you built a car, and you take a wheel away. Maybe you build a house, but the bottom needs to be sturdier. Once you find your problem, think about a new way to fix it so that it’s even better! Share your fixed-up creations with us!
Tip #3 - for Everyone!
Now that you’ve worked hard on building and fixing, talk with each other about big fixing and building projects you’ve seen near where you live. Construction crews seem to be at work so often, and it can be fun to watch! Look up some videos and pictures of different machines and tools needed for big construction and fixing projects, such as highway paving and building new offices. Can you make a list of steps that you think need to be followed for a big project? Will that list help you build better structures in the future?
