The Wonderful Wizard of Oz - Chapters 23 & 24 Reading Tips

Reading Tips for Chapters 23 & 24 - The End!

Dorothy comes to the end of her story!

Welcome back, friends, for our final installment of L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! In Chapter 22, Dorothy used the charm of the Golden Cap for the last time. In these chapters, she will finally learn how to get home!

Tip #1 - for Grown Ups!

We’ve reached the end of our readings of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! It’s been lovely having you follow along, and thank you for coming on the journey through Oz with us!

In Chapter 23, Dorothy and her friends finally meet Glinda, who makes sure the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion will safely return to where they want to go. She tells Dorothy that she always had the power to get home whenever she wanted, but just didn’t know the charm. In Chapter 24, Dorothy is finally reunited with Aunt Em.

For this chapter, talk with your child about happy endings. We all love a happy ending, right? Right! What are some of your child’s favorite stories with happy endings? Do happy endings always have only happy parts? Dorothy does have to leave behind her friends in order to go home. What other stories can you think of that have happy endings, but might have some sad parts, too? Does it make the story better to have more than just happy feelings?

Here’s the vocab for the last chapters!

  • Presentable

Clean and well-dressed

  • Ringlets

A way of describing curly hair with small, bouncy curls

Tip #2 - for Kids!

Welcome back, friends! We’ve come to the end of our readings of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, and Dorothy is finally going home!

For these last two chapters, your activity is to become a fashion designer! Dorothy’s amazing silver shoes had the power to take her home the whole time, but she had a wonderful adventure in Oz instead, and helped out three amazing friends. Design a pair of shoes that have magical power! What else do you think shoes can do? Will they look like shoes you like to wear, or will they have a different shape? What color are they? Do they make sound or light up? You decide!

Tip #3 - for Everyone!

With your magical shoes designed, talk to each other about what they can do, and what stories your magical shoes might fit into well. If your shoes can fly, can you think of a story where a character might have needed flight to solve a problem?
