Drop In Programs Featuring Art, Music & Theater

Blast to the Past: The Start of Art in the BGE Studio Workshop

Join us in the BGE Studio Workshop and spark your child’s imagination through fun, hands-on art projects that you work on together! This fall season's projects are designed to educate you about the origins of art as you explore ancient techniques!

Enter the Mess Zone as we work together to create tempera paints from scartch ingredients and leave our own pictographs on the cave walls! Or get your hands dirty digging and playing during our Clay Play activity.  Not crazy about getting messy? That’s okay! You can still get hands-on practicing Collography with us - the first form of printmaking!

Besides having fun getting a bit messy and exploring art, these projects are designed to help children learn gross and fine motor skills, encourage the manipulation of art media, expose children to art tools like clay and sculpting instruments, and inspire children to explore.

Art Shows at Port Discovery

Currently Displayed: Over / Under (Through October 2018)

Port Discovery believes strongly in the power of art! We regularly showcase artwork from area organizations, students and our own guests in the Museum. You can find our current Art Installation outside of the BGE StudioWorkshop.

Over / Under Exhibit

Drop in and engage with the Over/ Under art project located on the first floor just outside of Studio Workshop. This interactive, ever-changing piece of art is a collaborative art project that consists of a dynamic weaving wall. Guests will weave unconventional materials such as bubble wrap and ribbons into different patterns on a large netting structure. Over/ Under emphasizes the value of the freedom of art, allowing guests to pay specific attention to the details, craft, and expression of the designs. In addition, the act of weaving is therapeutic and relaxing—which comes as an inviting experience for most people. We invite each and every Port Discovery guest to take part in this collaborative art show!

Over/ Under promotes:

  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Pattern recognition
  • Color composition
