Please note: Although Port Discovery remains open, visitors cannot access the main Museum while construction is underway. Instead, join us to enjoy the hands-on and interactive Construction Zone in the Atrium at Port Discovery sponsored by M&T Bank, and visit us at our soon-to-open Port Discovery Pop-Up Play Space in the Shops at Kenilworth! Please note: Visitor capacity is limited at both locations.

Port Discovery offers educational drop-in programs nearly every day we are open, but we also offer a variety of special events and programs throughout the year that celebrate science, arts and culture, health, education, and more! Check out our events calendar for daily drop-in programs and a look at upcoming special events by date. 

Programs and exhibits at Port Discovery are made possible in part by the Citizens of Baltimore County and by the Howard County Arts Council through a grant from Howard County Government.

Cultural Celebrations

Native American Indian Heritage Day

Learn about, celebrate and recognize the contributions, culture, tradition and heritage of the indigenous Native American Indian tribes of Maryland on Native American Indian Heritage Day, recognized as an official State of Maryland Holiday and National day of celebration. Join us as members of the Piscataway and Lumbee tribes and representatives from the Baltimore American Indian Center educate visitors with Native Storytelling, interactive Cultural Dance programs, Native American Indian arts activities and demonstrations. And, don’t miss an enlightening, traditional ceremony featuring a Calling Song, Round Dance and Honor Song to honor this important holiday and celebrate Maryland’s indigenous Native American Indian Tribes. All Marylanders and visitors are invited to be part of this special, educational celebration, and Indigenous Tribes will in attendance as well!

Martin Luther King, Jr. I Have a Dream Weekend

Each year, Port Discovery celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream during the I Have A Dream Weekend celebration. The community comes to life over the three-day weekend with special performances, African-American living history presented by children from the Northwood Elementary School in Baltimore City, quilt making, and other arts and cultural activities. Celebrate with us over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in January!

Chinese New Year

Join us for our annual Chinese New Year celebration where families of all cultural backgrounds have the opportunity to learn, experience and appreciate the Chinese traditions surrounding the New Year celebration. Past performances, activities and guests have included the Chinese Lion Dancers of the Tai Yim Kung Fu School, Chinese themed arts and craft activities, story times and Chinese performances, activities with the Baltimore-Xiamen Sister City Committee, and more!

BOOseum Bash!

Have a spooktacular Halloween at Baltimore’s ultimate Halloween party for kids and families! Get your family into the Halloween spirit at the best Halloween celebration for children and families in Baltimore! You’ll be shocked at all the mischievous and interactive fun Port Discovery has planned! Join us on Saturday October 27 from 10 AM – 5PM and get  in costume a few days early as you dress up as your favorite Halloween character. Plus, celebrate Frankenstein though hands-on science activities that are sure to boo-st your interest in learning! The fun doesn’t stop there as Spark of Life has you create a working battery with not only two different type of metal…but your body, too!

Bring your scariest monster to life by visiting our Dough Creatures activity station and then invent something new by mixing and matching different parts of toys at the Frankentoy activity station. Don’t forget to get up close and personal with robots at Scribble Bot before you leave, as they’ll help you make a masterpiece to take home!

Veterans Day Celebration

Gather the little ones for a special day Littles’ Day celebrating our veterans! Create a Shrinky Dink Dog Tag, enjoy face painting with Landre SFX, join our signature Circle time, get Kinderfit! with the Kindersinger, and create patriotic art projects.

Thanksgiving Weekend Celebration

Join us for educational family fun events every day over Thanksgiving weekend! Learn about Native American Heritage on Friday, November 24, make a turkey plate and create gobble hats on Saturday, November 25, and join our Thankful Circle Time and award-winning literacy program Mother Goose on the Loose.

Noontime New Year's Celebration

Countdown to the New Year at noon on December 31 each year at Port Discovery's annual Noontime New Year celebration! Dress up in your favorite costume and enjoy a special themed party featuring special activities, performances, and a juice and cookies toast to the New Year at 12 pm! 

President's Day Weekend

Port Discovery will be open for fun and learning over President's Day weekend, which will also mark the final weekend to enjoy Nickelodeon's Dora & Diego - Let's Explore! exhibit at Port Discovery. Check back for details on events and activities planned for this family-friendly weekend. 

Health & Wellness Events

Healthy First Saturday

Healthy First Saturdays is a monthly health fair held at the Museum. Held on the first Saturday of each month, the event features health and fitness related activities including kid-friendly yoga, cooking demonstrations, health information tables, and more. Partners and programs include including Cook & Tell programs with McCormick and Company, Inc., FIDOS for Freedom therapy dogs, UMBC Department of Public Health, the Kindersinger's Kinderfit program, and the FazaFam Family Jam!

STEM Events

STEM in Spring (Spring Break Week)

During Maryland Public Schools’ spring break, Port Discovery hosts STEM in Spring, a week long period of special programs dedicated to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). The Museum partners with organizations that specialize in STEM learning, including NISE Network (Nanoscale Informal STEMEducation), NASA, Sylvan Learning, Eric Energy and other community partners to engage and spark interest in STEM through interactive, hands-on activities.

Days for Six & Under

Infant & Toddler Time

Do you have a child ages 6 or under? Wednesdays are designed with you in mind! Join us for special drop-in programs dedicated to children ages birth through 6 years! Enjoy our award-winning literacy program Mother Goose on the Loose, create amazing sounds and learn about rhythm in the Percussion Garden, take part in our signature Circle Time, and dance along to the lively Jingle Jangle Music Time. Please check our event calendar for an up-to-date schedule for upcoming Wonderful Wednesdays. 

Little's Day

Each month, Port Discovery hosts a Saturday dedicated to the littles in the family! With programs designed especially for children six and under, your little one will dance and sing along to the Kindersinger, enjoy interactive Circle Times where they get involved in the story, dance and sing along during Jingle Jangle Music Time, and more! Have older siblings or children that want to visit on Littles' Day? They are more than welcome! Our three floors of interactive, hands-on exhibits are sure to keep them engaged while learning through play!   

Countdown to Kindergarten

Help prepare young children for their first school experience by experiencing fun early literacy activities at the Museum. Countdown to Kindergarten is an annual community-wide event held each spring that encourages school readiness skills in children about to enter kindergarten while providing parents with information and resources, including health care screenings and free books.

Events for Children With Special Needs

Discovery Days

Discovery Days are special days of the year dedicated to students with disabilities and special needs. Students visit the Museum and explore the exhibits, programs, and special activities in a safe and fun environment.

Discovery Days are offered each year, and admission is discounted (40% or more) or free (with grant support) for Maryland school students. Each day features special activities, performances and information tables. Advance registration is required. Contact Kristie Gulick at 410.864.2664 or

Discovery Week

Every year, Port Discovery sets aside days for children with special needs and their caretakers as part of the museum’s dedication to inclusive learning. The Museum staff lowers volume, sound effects, and lights so that children with physical and cognitive abilities can truly enjoy the museum experience. Activities are designed for children with special needs, but all children are encouraged to join this fun-filled week. Children with IEP’s are welcome at this week’s events. Maryland School Break Weeks

Winter Break Week

Join us every day over Winter Break for educational hands-on programs! Enjoy a special winter-themed puppet show, create Diffusion Snowflakes, get up close with animals at the Wildlife Adventures Petting Zoo, and enjoy a winter twist on our award-winning literacy program, Snow Goose on the Loose. Winter Break Week 2017 will be held Tuesday, December 26 through Saturday, December 30! Check back for more details soon.

Events for Adults

Hops & Vines - November 2018

Adults Take Over Port Discovery! Take a night off from adulting and be a kid again! Join Port Discovery for theAnnual Hops & Vines Fundraiser, where you’ll take part in fun activities, demonstrations, make Shrinky Dinks, and explore three floors of interactive exhibits that bring out your inner child. Enjoy libations from some of Baltimore’s best breweries and wineries, plus sample foods from top restaurants in the area. Better yet, you’ll be raising funds for Port Discovery’s access programs, which provide free or reduced admission to the Museum for families and schools in economically challenged communities, children with special needs and for military families. More information will be posted as the 2018 Hops & Vines events nears!
