Reopening FAQ: What expectations do you have of guests?

It takes all of us to create a safe, smart, and magical place to play and learn! To ensure all visitors have a great and safe experience, we expect our staff, volunteers, visitors, and members to act responsibly and be considerate of others as we share this space. Your responsibilities as a guest include:

  • Sick Visitor Policy: Port Discovery Children’s Museum works to provide a safe and healthy environment for all guests. As part of our effort to create this environment, we ask staff and guests to avoid visiting if you or anyone in your party are sick, showing signs of illness, have recently been exposed to someone with COVID-19 like symptoms, or have recently received a positive COVID-19 test result. Upon purchasing or reserving tickets, guests will be required to sign waivers regarding your responsibilities as a visitor, and regarding what the Museum is doing to keep you safe. Upon entry, all guests will be required to complete a health questionnaire.  Staff and Museum vendors are also required to complete health screenings before entering the Museum. Review the full sick policy
  • Stay within your bubble. Practice safe physical distancing. We ask that guests please stay within their bubble - also known as the group of people you are visiting with - and maintain a distance of at least 6 feet away from staff members and those not within your party. Please also observe exhibit capacity signage. Floor markers and reminder signage will be found in all spaces.
  • Face Coverings Required: In accordance with CDC, State, and local guidelines, face coverings that properly cover your nose and mouth are required for guests ages 2 and older. Face coverings must cover the nose and mouth, be secured with ties or ear loops, and fit snugly against the face. Acceptable examples include surgical masks and cloth face masks (either purchased or handmade). A supply of complimentary surgical masks are on hand for those who arrive without a proper face covering. We understand that you and your family may need mask breaks while you are here. To take a mask break, exit the Museum and then use your receipt to re-enter with masks in place.
  • Keeping it Clean: We have installed hand sanitizer stations throughout the Museum, including upon entry to the Museum and upon entry/exit to each exhibit. Guests are required to sanitize their hands when entering the Museum, and when entering/exiting each exhibit space. We also ask guests to wash their hands frequently during their visit. Please also use the dirty toy bins throughout the Museum to place dirtied toys.
  • Go with the Flow: Please follow directional signage and instructions from staff. Limit elevator usage to one family/group at a time, follow one-way signage for entry, exit, Museum stairs, and main floors.
  • Snacks and drinks other than water are only allowed in The Pier (located on the first floor). Tables and chairs will be arranged to allow safe physical distancing. Please share tables with those in your bubble only. Use the provided hand wipes to wipe down surfaces before and after use. Masks can be temporarily removed while seated and snacking or enjoying beverages only.
  • See something odd? Tell us! Help us ensure you have a great visit. Tell us if you encounter something that needs cleaning up, isn’t working properly, or seems odd. We’re here to help! Comment cards are also available.

Reopening FAQ: How is the Museum maintaining social distancing? How do you maintain social distancing with kids?

To ensure there's plenty of room for play, learning, and safe physical distancing, we've significantly reduced our capacity and the number of tickets we sell on any day the Museum is open. As a result, you'll find that the number of people enjoying the Museum at any one time will be significantly reduced.

To manage visitor capacity, admission is by advance reservation and ticketing only. Before arriving to the Museum. you must reserve or purchase a ticket for the day you'd like to visit the Museum. Be sure to plan ahead to make sure you can join us on the day that works best for you.

All exhibit areas will have recommended capacity limits based on CDC guidelines and the specific size and layout of each space. Exhibit capacity information will be posted and visible outside of each exhibit area. If an exhibit area is full, visitors are asked to visit another area and return to the exhibit later.

We ask that families respect the space of other families while being understanding that physical distancing can be hard for children. We ask you to remind children to play within their bubble. Museum staff will also be positioned around the Museum to assist with physical distancing concerns or questions, and to remind visitors to use hand sanitizers, observe capacity limits, and observe directional signage.

We've also created one-way entrance and exit points for the Museum, one-way linear paths for exploring each floor of the Museum, and one-way directional paths for stairways. Extensive signage and floor decals are located throughout the Museum to guide visitors during their visits and to encourage physical distancing everywhere.

We've also installed sanitizing stations throughout the Museum and require guests to use them upon entrance to the Museum and upon entrance/exit of each exhibit area. We also ask that guests wash their hands frequently while visiting the Museum.

We've installed Plexi-glass barriers in several areas throughout the Museum as well, including at our Box Office Ticketing Stations and at several exhibit areas in the Museum as well.

Reopening FAQ: Are you improving the air quality in the building?

Our HVAC system has always been programmed to regularly bring in and circulate fresh air. In addition, with guidance from HVAC experts, we have upgraded to MERV 10 filters to help catch as many small particles as is practical.

Reopening FAQ: What physical changes are you making to the building to enhance safety, such as reorienting the entrances and exits, putting up glass barriers, etc.?

We've made a variety of changes to the building to enhance safety and encourage physical distancing.

We've created one-way entrances and exit areas for visitors. We are requiring advanced tickets/reservations to manage capacity and to reduce contact and time required to enter the building. Floor graphics and signage are in place to promote physical distancing while in line, and plexiglass barriers have been installed at our Box Office ticketing stations to protect visitors and staff.

To ensure there's plenty of room for play, learning, and safe physical distancing, we've significantly reduced our capacity and the number of tickets we sell on any day the Museum is open. As a result, you'll find that the number of people enjoying the Museum at any one time will be significantly reduced.

All exhibit areas will have recommended capacity limits based on CDC guidelines and the specific size and layout of each space. Exhibit capacity information will be posted and visible outside of each exhibit area. If an exhibit area is full, visitors are asked to visit another area and return to the exhibit later.

We've installed Plexi-glass barriers in several areas throughout the Museum as well, including at our Box Office Ticketing Stations and at several exhibit areas as well.

Reopening FAQ: What things are cleaned and how often?

The Museum is maintaining cleaning capacity at the highest level possible and has leveled up our already robust cleaning practices. Extensive cleaning and disinfecting will be taking place before, during, and after your visit to the Museum. Reopening FAQ: How has the cleaning changed?

During our temporary closure, Port Discovery Children's  Museum underwent a deep clean with products that are both EPA recommended and certified disinfectants for use  COVID-19. All cleaning procedures closely follow CDC updates and recommendations that reduce the spread of germs. Port Discovery staff have been trained extensively on proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures following OSHA guidelines and safety precautions.  Daily Deep cleaning and sanitizing will take place after hours with electrostatic spray disinfection which kills viruses, bacterial, and mold.   In addition, all plush and fabric toys have been removed from the floor as per the CDC’s recommended guidelines. The Museum continues to offer toys and manipulatives for use by guests. In order to minimize the spread of germs, Port Discovery has created multiple sets of all our toys and manipulatives for all of our exhibits. The Museum will regularly clean, remove, and replace manipulatives from the floor to help minimize the spread of germs.  Find more details on our cleaning practices: https://www.portdiscovery.org/cleaning

Reopening FAQ: How do I register for my member account so that I can reserve tickets?

If this is your first time reserving online tickets, you will need to have your membership number to register your account. For assistance, email memberships@portdiscovery.org or call 410-864-2665.

Reopening FAQ: I was unable to reserve a ticket as a member/tickets were unavailable. Why is that?

We're very sorry for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding. To ensure that there's plenty of room for play, learning, and safe physical distancing, we've significantly reduced the number of tickets available on any day the Museum is open. This means that you'll enjoy the Museum experience with fewer people, but that tickets may not always be available for the day you'd like to visit. We are also operating with reduced hours at this time as we navigate safely reopening to the public in a sustainable way.
