Did you know that Port Discovery Children’s Museum is a 501(c)(3) non-profit institution funded by Museum admission, individuals, and community support? This community support includes grants from local funding agencies, including Howard County Government and the Howard County Arts Council. This support allows Port Discovery to provide safe, smart places for Howard County families to learn, play, and be creative together—both at the Museum and through Port Discovery’s traveling outreach programs.

Port Discovery Children’s Museum officially kicked off construction on two new major exhibits – The Port Exhibit and a new four-story SkyClimber - on Friday, January 4, 2019 with a star-studded lineup of guest speakers and guests.

Port Discovery Children’s Museum Receives $250,000 Grant from the Abbott Fund for Four-Story SkyClimber Exhibit

Port Discovery is pleased to announce that it has received a $250,000 grant from the Abbott Fund, the foundation of the global healthcare company Abbott.  

These funds will be used to support Port Discovery Children’s Museum’s new four-story SkyClimber exhibit, which will allow children to climb up “into the clouds” on a series of platforms inside seamless netting. The new exhibit is meant to improve gross motor skill development, increase physical fitness and build self-confidence in children.

The Next Generation of Youth Advisors

Before Port Discovery Children’s Museum first opened to the public in 1998, a child named Cindy volunteered to serve on a focus group for the Museum called the Youth Advisory Council (YAC). During Port Discovery’s construction and first several years of operation, she and numerous other children advised Port Discovery's creative team on "how to figure what kids are all about," according to Nora Thompson, Port Discovery’s Curator of Innovation.
