On March 27, Port Discovery Children’s Museum hosted its annual fundraising gala, Play It Forward, with this year’s theme, “Intergalactic Odyssey.” The evening brought together Baltimore’s community of champions for children, families, and playful learning to celebrate the boundless potential of childhood and reaffirm a shared commitment to access and belonging. The culmination of donations and sponsorships received leading up to Play It Forward raised over $300,000!
This year’s event was led by Event Co-Chairs Maggie Kennedy, Keisha McClain, Robyn Murphy, Christina Giffin, and Ethan Giffin.
Guests at Play It Forward began their intergalactic odyssey as soon as they entered the museum, which was transformed with starry lights, cosmic decor, and glittery disco moon. With two signature cocktails to choose from (The Darth Vader and Lunar Lavender Cosmo), guests travelled through the cosmically lit space tunnel into the Atrium for dinner and the program.
The night began with a wonderful warm welcome from Mayor Brandon Scott and First Lady Hana Scott. The First Family of Baltimore are strong supporters of the museum, and are fellow parents who regularly come to Port Discovery with their children, Ceron, Charm, and Camden, for family outings and field trips.

Not one that looks like this and certainly not one that shows up for our community like this. And I’m saying that as Mayor—but also as a Baltimore kid… and as a parent. I’ve been here. Attendees were able to watch a testimonial video about what Port Discovery means to Baltimore and the impact we are striving to achieve. And that for kids, play is a necessary right and should not be viewed as a luxury.
The theme of “Intergalactic Odyssey” served as a reminder that exploration is not reserved for astronauts. Every child embarks on their own journey of discovery. At Port Discovery, that journey is supported by intentional exhibit design, inclusive programming, and a commitment to ensuring that every child feels seen and valued.
Investing in Access and Belonging
In her address, President & CEO Carter Arnot Polakoff spoke about the importance of sustaining spaces where children and families can experience joy without barriers.
She reflected on the challenges families face today, including financial strain, academic pressure, and limited access to high-quality enrichment opportunities. In this environment, providing affordable and inclusive access to playful learning is not optional. It is essential.
After dinner, event attendees returned to the main museum space to continue their odyssey on the dancefloor and beyond. Throughout the evening, guests engaged in hands-on activities such as shrinky dinks, a cosmic creation mural project and if guests wanted a break, they could enjoy our immersive Room of Stars.
Looking Ahead
Port Discovery remains steadfast in its belief that joy should not be determined by zip code and curiosity should not be limited by income. Through access initiatives and community partnerships, the Museum continues to expand opportunities for families who may not otherwise be able to visit.
