May Events and Programs at Port Discovery

Join Port Discovery in May for “Once Upon a Book” with activities, events and programs inspired by all things books! Tot Tales: Story time for Toddlers will feature books from the American Library Association’s “Notable Children’s Books” lists. Watch short, interactive puppet cooking shows combining abbreviated versions of famous children’s books, real food facts and pretend food props right in Tiny’s Diner! Watch and listen to famous classic children’s books re-told through the art of shadow puppetry. Design and construct a comic book themed costume or prop accessory using cardboard, colored tape, and other materials. Plus, visit at the end of May for Eric Carle inspired activities that will accompany Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit at Port Discovery, starting May 21st.

May hours:  Port Discovery is open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays with Play Sessions from 10 AM- 1 PM and 2 PM– 5 PM. 

Special Hours: Port Discovery will be open on Memorial Day.

Enjoy play, learning and family fun for just $2 per person during Port Discovery's $2 Community Day on May 4th. Come play and learn while exploring Port Discovery’s three floors of interactive exhibits including The SkyClimber, The Port, Tiny's Diner, Wonders of Water, and more! Tickets are nonrefundable and nontransferable. Cannot be combined with other offers. Limit 6 per transaction. Transaction must include at least one adult and one child.

Ticket to Discovery Book Club

Port Discovery Children’s Museum and Enoch Pratt Free Library are partnering to encourage children to read, play and discover through Ticket to Discovery Book Club. Baltimore-area children in fifth grade or younger with a Pratt Library card can receive a special Ticket to Discovery bookmark from their local Pratt Library (supplies are limited). After reading or listening to five books, participants can use the unique code on the bookmark to reserve up to two free admission tickets to Port Discovery Children’s Museum via the Museum’s online ticketing system. Salute the Troops

Between Memorial Day and July 4th, veterans and active-duty military receive free admission to Port Discovery! Service members will also receive $2.00 off general admission for guests.

Very Eric Carle: A Very Hungry, Quiet, Lonely, Clumsy, Busy Exhibit

Step into the pages of author Eric Carle's books with Port Discovery Children’s Museum’s limited time exhibit – Very Eric Carle. Explore themes such as hope, hard work, persistence, and friendship as you venture through classic works including The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket, The Very Lonely Firefly, The Very Clumsy Click Beetle and The Very Busy Spider from beloved author/illustrator Eric Carle. Discovery Cart—Earth Science  

Stop by our Discovery Cart for a selection of science projects or sensory play. These activities will explore themes found in many of Eric Carle’s books: nature, the environment, and small, living things.  May 21, 22, 27, 28, 29, and 30 at 2:30 p.m.

Studio Takeover with Genie Arnot from Social Studio

Guest artist Genie Arnot from Social Studio will be doing an Eric Carle inspired art project to celebrate the arrival of the Very Eric Carle traveling exhibit. Saturday, May 21 and Sunday, May 22- all day

Kamishibai Storytelling

Kamishibai or “paper drama” is a form of Japanese storytelling using illustrated cards. Watch a selection of stories while learning about the cultural history and evolution of this beautiful style of performance. Wednesday, May 25 at 12:00 and 2:30 pm

Drop-In Educational Programs

Cardboard Comic Book Costume Design

Comic books are filled with imaginative designs. Design and construct a comic book themed costume or prop accessory using cardboard, colored tape, and other materials. Kids and adults can also model some of our pre-made cardboard creations.  Wednesday, May 4th- all day

A Cook Book Puppet Show

There’s a lot of wacky foods in children’s literature and their book characters are bringing them to Tiny’s Diner. Watch short, interactive puppet cooking shows combining abbreviated versions of famous children’s books, real food facts and pretend food props. You’ll never know who will appear and what’s on the menu! Friday, May 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 12 p.m.

Shadow Stories

Watch and listen to famous classic children’s books re-told through the art of shadow puppetry. Saturday, May 14th at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Sing-A-Long with Mr. Seth

Join Port Discovery’s own resident musician, Mr. Seth, in an authentic campfire sing-a-long with live, acoustic guitar accompaniment. Listen and sing both old favorites, tunes inspired by children’s books, and original songs. Wednesdays and Saturdays at 3:30 p.m.

Robinson Nature Center Outreach Programs

Brown Bear, Polar Bear: What Do You Say?  

Earth’s animals have been a source of inspiration for storytellers throughout human history. In this theatre arts program, guests will learn how to use movement, voice, and design to retell author Bill Martin Jr.’s books. Then collaborate in the creation of a new, inspired story through costumes, props, and audio effects.  May 7 from 2:30pm-3:30 p.m.

Nature Prints and Processes  

This visual arts program is an exciting examination of nature and the ways we can use it to express our creativity. A fun scavenger hunt around Robinson Nature Center’s grounds will provide participants with the tools for several printmaking projects. Witness the qualities that make natural materials the perfect tools for creating unique artwork. May 21 from 2:30pm-3:30 p.m.

Tots on Board: Early Childhood Programs for Infants & Toddlers

Toddling Tunes: Music Time for Toddlers

Shake, rattle, clap, and play! Experiment with musical instruments as we move to the music. This program helps little learners develop coordination, communication, and creativity! Wednesdays & Saturdays at 11 a.m.
